Any time a supplement suggests that you take multiple pills per day, you should be suspicious. After all, the necessary doses of active ingredients needed to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) can easily fit into one pill or capsule. Provelex Plus suggests taking three tablets twice per day for a total of six pills. This suggests that either the formulation is poor or, more likely, they simply want you to buy more pills.
Provelex Plus is manufactured by Merazon Health Products, which is found in Seattle. In 2005, Merazon was cited by the FDA for making false claims about a product called Immune Guard and its ability to cure the common cold. Merazon has also been the subject of an expose on Quackwatch for its marketing tactics and use of pseudoscience.
Provelex Plus contains 700 mg of saw palmetto extract, beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, Swedish flower pollen (400 mg), and a host of other beneficial sterols.
It is difficult to pin down just how efficacious Provelex Plus might be. The product contains a lot of saw palmetto (twice the recommended dose), but laboratory testing suggests that it isn’t a sterol-rich version of the herb. Low sterol content suggests that the saw palmetto used in Provelex Plus is of low quality or that it has been so highly processed as to render it useless.
Swedish flower extract may or may not reduce prostate-related inflammation and bladder obstruction. No solid clinical evidence has been presented to support this claim, but tomes of anecdotal evidence are available. It is probable that it has little effect.
There is nothing in Provelex Plus that would make the supplement unsafe. If you have pollen allergies, you will probably want to avoid it given that it contains flower extract.
Final Grade: C
Provelex Plus contains all of the right ingredients but in very low-quality forms. This fact, combined with the shameless marketing that encourages customers to consume six pills per day, sinks this supplement to a very low grade. There are far better supplements on the market.
